Finding Joy

Live Life Vibrant Posted on December 23, 2015 by SusanDecember 23, 2015

christmas tree
‘Tis the season to be sure, but finding joy is sometimes a very elusive event. I liken it to following the flight of a kite, subject only to the whim of the wind. Or perhaps to a magnificent cloud formation that changes shape and form even as we behold it. If I had to give joy a personality, it would be that of a fairy or elf, appearing with a flutter of wings or a twinkle in the eye but vanishing just as soon.

Yesterday I went to the jeweler’s in the mall just to have a couple of knots unwound from a fine chain necklace. The humble pride of the jeweler in doing the job was so evident. “Oh,” he said, “I do this all the time, many times a day.” The knots were unraveled so quickly and he kindly affixed the chain back on for me. No charge and “Merry Christmas.” What a joyful interchange. And the mall was packed with children hopping and skipping, babes in arms and men waiting patiently on the benches for their shopping wives. Hustle and bustle but I was in the midst of joy.

I found a shiny penny in the grocery store parking lot peeking out from slightly melted snow and ice. In such moments you think, “Aha! I have found joy!” And then the moment passes, the present has become the past and now I am in the future wondering where the joy escaped to this time. It is rather like a geyser erupting. When it does, the power of that steamy water shooting heavenward is magnificent. And then all is so quiet again.

I’m sure we all know that joy really resides in the heart, but don’t we still seek it somewhere outside ourselves? Sometimes meeting with old friends brings back memories of times when our connection was deep and profound and the whole experience of an hour together becomes days worth of joy. My clever brother wrapped his packages in newspaper and they look so understatedly joyful under the tree, speaking of his practicality and fine wit.

Perhaps I should remember that not only am I seeking joy, joy is also seeking me. Joy is seeking you. Somehow at Christmas in lights and song, joy seems to be multiplying. May your hearts and homes be filled up with that magical elusive quality we call Joy.

Neighborhood messages

Just as I have been writing about our true nature and attuning to the higher realm, I found this lovely expression in an overnight snow right near my garage yesterday. Someone took the time to create footprints of love. It lightened my day and reminded me to keep life simple, focus on the essentials and make my interactions and expressions heartfelt.

This morning as I walked in the crispy air along the duck pond trail, there was definitely love in the air along with a lot of quacking and conversation. I wondered if they were considering whether to stay for the winter. The pond is almost all frozen and they were huddled in one corner where the water is still flowing. Perhaps they were discussing warmer destinations. The lesson for me was to love the ones you’re with and make the best of your circumstances, even if a change is necessary.

Finally along the trail I met a man with a beautiful Saint Bernard who jumped up joyfully to greet me. I asked if the dog was still young, because she was smaller than some. She was 10 months old, just past puppyhood. I have always thought that if I ever had a dog (not so feasible in a third floor apartment), it would be a Saint Bernard. Perhaps it’s my imagination but they seem so determined and mission oriented.12-01-05045

I remember tales of climbers being rescued from snowbound situations on the high mountain trails of the Alps. Anyway, it’s one of those dreams that has swirled around me for many years. As the man walked away, he called the dog to follow saying, “C’mon Suzy.” Hmmm. I’m usually a Susan and not a Suzy, but it was close enough to remind me not to give up on my dreams. Sorry no picture of the actual Suzy, but she looked something like this.

All this to say that if your heart is open, the messages will appear. Sometimes you don’t have to travel far. God Winks and I am reminded that the universe is listening, lessons are rolling in and I only need be grateful to realize that I’m on the right track.

Our true nature

A friend and I were recently discussing how we feel “in the midst of it all.” Global events, political rhetoric, holiday frenzy and personal heartache are not exactly a recipe for inner peace.

However, it is rare that looking to the outside and analyzing the human condition will provide the answer. At least we must recognize that we are capable of stepping back and observing ourselves in the midst of it all. You might call it a cosmic perspective. You might ask, as many have, who is the presence observing?

When you think about it deeply, we are quite divinely and beautifully made. We are part of the universe and yet we also have the universe within. The fire rainbow can be seen without, but can also be realized within. It is that place of our true nature which is peaceful and yet full of the colorful fire of the heart. It is the spirit that rises up and shines when the chips are down, the winds of change are billowing through and we don’t really know what the future holds for us. It is the beauty of the soul, radiating through all the temporary effluvia. It is the quiet yet resolute inner voice. It is who we really are.

As I write Christmas cards, wrap packages and participate in the joys of the season, I am also reminded to be present with who I really am, listening for the glory of the rainbow within. I am reminded to look for that rainbow in each and every one I meet. I remember a question posed to a saint or sage asking, “What is real?” The answer was, “Only that which does not change is real.” In the midst of it all, I am meditating on the unchanging nature of who we really are and celebrating that reality.

Giving and Receiving

Christmas appears to be rolling in faster than ever this year. And suddenly we are more focused on giving. Let’s not forget about receiving. I am already finding that a gift of homemade banana bread from a very busy teenager deserves high awards. A homemade pot holder from a friend who never gets to the end of her priority list means so much. A chance one-minute meeting with an old friend in a store parking lot is just what it is, serendipitous. We didn’t even have to go to the “we should get together sometime,” because we were already there, even so briefly. We may be rushing around, but stopping to receive and be grateful is definitely empowering.

Staying in the present rather than a focusing on finding the perfect gift keeps our joy right in the moment and ripe for multiplication. It’s the openness of heart I am seeking and the ability to receive with genuine appreciation. And giving something different. This year I’m stepping out by staying in and opening my door to my new apartment building neighbors for a holiday open house. Not knowing the results, who will come, what will happen is like watching a sacred mystery unfolding. I can’t wait!

A few weeks ago in the midst of my de-cluttering/clearing space project, I collected all kinds of valuable objects around my house and put them into a Gift Box. I found things I had purchased recently, items from long ago, gifts I have never used, etc. I closed the box and only re-opened it as the holiday season approached. Aha! This is perfect for this friend, this for a December birthday, this for another time, etc. Some might call it re-gifting, but I prefer treasure sharing. It’s very joyful. Someone else gets to enjoy this little item that I have loved for a short time or long.

And helping one another is such a gift. Whether it’s part of our profession or simply part of who we are, wholehearted living can never fail to open doors and create new opportunities. May all your giving and receiving be filled with joy.

Rethink Gratitude

In the process of de-cluttering/making space/re-organizing my office, I found this boldly typed message that I commanded of myself a few years ago. I promptly tacked it on top of a favorite picture of mine, a blowup of a friend’s great photo of fireworks against the night sky. That image holds a special place on my office wall because it so clearly represents my motto to Live Life Vibrant. But back to re-thinking.

As I began meditating on Gratitude, as we are reminded to do when Thanksgiving approaches, I realized that sometimes it requires a change of thinking. It’s akin to walking through a cloud of resistance in order to re-frame our thoughts and create the life we often profess but more than often fall short of. The resistance appears almost as a temptation to revert to the comfortable old ways of viewing life. Oh dear, why is this happening to me? It isn’t fair! Someone else’s life is so much better than mine. It’s just too hard!, etc. It’s so easy to let this what I call old-school thinking divert our attention, even in the smallest ways.

Here’s an example. The corner where I live features busy traffic patterns and is in the process of being adorned with a traffic light. This has required huge metal poles lying in our front yard, men in lime green vests, trucks and all manner of construction equipment for days and even weeks. Although I’m glad that the end result will be a traffic light, I’ve been resisting the process of getting it installed. I’ve found myself slightly annoyed at the noise and commotion. Then last night when I saw those men working late under big lights to finish a certain part of the project before the oncoming snowstorm, I realized my thoughts had not been helpful to me or to those hard-hats. These are men with lives and probably families and have been working hard to accomplish their task. They are most likely unaware of my thoughts, but I could have been more supportive. The creative doors in my life would have opened a little further.

And all this to illustrate that Gratitude is not just for friends, family and the good things in life. If that attitude can be applied to everything that comes our way, then we are participating in receiving and giving from a much larger perspective. We are walking through the resistance and Re-thinking Everything.

May I be granted the grace to remember this lesson every day and not just on Thanksgiving. And may I say I am grateful to you for reading and participating in Winks & Wisdom!

Tidying up, de-cluttering and the winds of change

Live Life Vibrant Posted on November 18, 2015 by SusanNovember 18, 2015

After a tumultuous night of howling winds in Montana, the sun is out and the sky is blue. It’s another reminder, however, of the greater winds of change that are hurtling around the planet since last week’s tragedy in Paris. The only blessings I can identify are that another wake-up call has taken place and our globe seems so much more connected. And we pray that these blessings outweigh the darkness and the grief.
And meanwhile, this shot of a Bozeman sunset from a few days ago, clouds hurtling towards the horizon. For some reason it spoke to me of the project I am in the midst of, clearing space in my office. When I moved about six months ago, there were numerous boxes stacked in the garage with the label, “I just can’t deal with this right now.” Every time I’ve driven into the garage since then, I’ve looked at those boxes of scrapbooks, family pictures, work files, photography, etc. Finally a couple of weeks ago, time was up.
Just as I embarked on the project, a friend lent me The Magic Art of Tidying Up, which I added to years of study of de-cluttering, feng shui and space clearing. Suddenly it seems that so many of the memories are already within me. There are always a few treasures to keep, but the globe seems to be spinning too fast to hold onto everything. And in order that a new chapter be initiated, a clean page be created, much of this weight just has to go.
What is always so invigorating, and tends to be forgotten, is the emotional de-cluttering that accompanies the process. I find I can let go of an identity I claimed years ago. I find my work has evolved and my vision boards have come to fruition. Files for clients I no longer have can be replaced with creative and inspiring new projects, housed in my new “Fun Basket.” What better time and season to re-awaken to our own gifts and talents and re-commit ourselves to sharing those with others. How else will this world rise up to meet the challenges we face? May your own life be re-energized, re-vitalized and re-awakened as well as we ride on the winds of change.

A time for sacrifice and a time for

Live Life Vibrant Posted on November 11, 2015 by SusanNovember 11, 2015

statue of liberty

It’s Veterans Day and I feel a deep debt of gratitude for all those who have served and who are serving for America. No matter all the politics left or right, this country remains a unique experiment in freedom and liberty. And it brings to mind the understanding of sacrifice in our lives. Veterans make a commitment to something much greater than themselves, a feeling of standing for principles, fighting for others, defending people they don’t even know.

And many others are making sacrifices every day for something they believe in. Mothers make that sacrifice every hour of every day for their children. Fathers work jobs that may not be to their liking to support their families. Teachers, nurses, firefighters, EMTs…I could go on. There are individuals whose life is all sacrifice, let’s say Mother Theresa. For many, living a life of sacrifice is the key to their victory.

I also think of the ability to love ourselves, even in the midst of sacrifice. The ability to practice self-care, to breathe life into our giving and to celebrate our seemingly small accomplishments gives a new meaning to the word. The roots of the word mean to perform sacred rites, elevating the definition from biblical days. I believe it has come to mean recognizing the divine in what you do. Whether you are serving your whole country or the blossoming potential in a young child, you are recognizing a sacred duty.

And so it is, that whether you are in the midst of a cycle of sacrifice or in another time of your life, acknowledging the divine within you becomes a key to your own victory. Many of those I work with do not recognize the goodness they are doing for others or the lessons they are learning. There is a tendency to focus on the mistakes, the not-so-perfect relationship or job, or the negative self-talk that seems to creep in even when the door is locked. Let us care for ourselves as we would care for our best friend, our spouse, our child or our elderly parent. Let us give ourselves credit for who we are and what we have become. There is always room for improvement, but let us start with recognizing that we are a portion of the divine, sacred souls to be cared for. To ignore that divinity is to brush aside our very beliefs in the greater sacrifices we can make. Great love has many manifestations. Give some of that great love back to yourself today.

Go where the love is

Live Life Vibrant Posted on November 4, 2015 by SusanNovember 3, 2015

heartintheclouds

A few years ago, a client was having multiple problems with members of his family. After considering a number of different strategies for dealing with those who didn’t seem to understand his change of lifestyle, he came up with the solution: go where the love is. I remember at the time asking him if I could use his quote, which he agreed to. And it turned on to be the best strategy of all – focusing on those who offered him support and love and taking the attention off of those who were complaining or criticizing (but not writing them off entirely).

I’ve come to realize that this is also a great motto or mantra for many areas of our lives. If we follow the de-cluttering experts when we clean our closets, the essential question is: Do you love it? When we are re-arranging or re-decorating our homes, the feng shui experts put a great emphasis on directing love into your surroundings. Objects of beauty become even more essential to our wellbeing when they hold meaning for us and make our hearts sing. And it’s great to fill our homes with the things we love, be it bookshelves full of our favorite authors, toys all over for the children we care so much for, or images of the spiritual beings that inspire our lives.

A meal created with joy will draw others to the table and leave them feeling nourished and comforted. Our mothers and grandmothers were often great examples of this simple truth. Cooking can be compared to the alchemical process. As the fire enlivens the ingredients or the fire of your heart chops or pickles or tosses the salad, the essential energy is of course love.

And to our friendships and families, don’t you find that when you really love someone, there is always time for them? The precious nature of those relationships cannot be underestimated, whether they be right around the corner or across the country or the globe.

There are also situations where we have go, taking love with us. It could be a job that we’re not crazy about, doing the dishes or shoveling snow. But if we add love and practice mindfulness in the process, we may find our negative thoughts disappearing in the midst of it all. I don’t present this as a simplistic solution to difficult situations which may take more in-depth work, but an “attitude of gratitude” really can’t hurt.

And if you are at a crossroads, deciding what to choose next or seeking to make major life improvements, one thing I know for sure. The best way to make a decision is to listen to your heart and go where the love is.

Great new reads

Live Life Vibrant Posted on October 22, 2015 by SusanOctober 24, 2015

On that tablecloth-covered picnic table outside my lake retreat cabin, were three great new just-published books. Great reads all and all focused on discovering our authenticity and our ability to express it …. emotionally, creatively and with empathy and vision. Tools for transformation!

rising strong
Rising Strong, the Reckoning, the Rumble, the Revolution, the latest by Brene Brown. From the back cover: “The irony is that we disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable. But our wholeness – even our wholeheartedness- actually depends on the integration of all of our experiences, including the falls.”

Big Magic, Creative Living Beyond Fear, from Eat-Pray-Love Elizabeth Gilbert. Her back cover says, “Creativity is sacred, and it is not sacred. What we make matters enormously, and it doesn’t matter at all. We toil alone, and we are accompanied by spirits. We are terrified, and we are brave. Art is a crushing chore and a wonderful privilege. The work wants to be made, and it wants to be made through you.”
And I say we are all artists in our own ways.big magic

Louder Than Words, Harness the Power of Your Authentic Voice, Todd Henry. Todd is asking us what unique message we have to share with the world and how we examine the deep self-knowledge necessary to communicate it. “Remember that your work is not about you, it’s about the impact you create and the value you deliver to those you serve. This all begins with an empathetic vision.”louder than words
